The original Governors’ Camp nestles in the forest along the winding banks of the Mara River, whose waters teem with hippo and crocodile.
Everything is under canvas, but this isn’t camping as you know it: each of the 37 tents has an en-suite bathroom with hot and cold running water and a flushing toilet. The setting is magical. So much so that almost a century ago it was reserved, exclusively, for Kenya’s colonial Governors. When it first opened many decades ago, Governors’ Camp set new standards in luxury for tented camps. Today it remains one of Africa’s best. Every morning a breakfast feast is prepared over blazing coals: mountains of bacon, eggs the way you like them, fresh milk flown-in daily, hot-baked croissants, exotic fruits, and freshly-brewed Kenyan coffee. This luxury camp highlights the romance and intrigue of the safari era.
